Skin microbiome emerges with latest Aussie launch
The skin microbiome is emerging as the next trend in skincare with the latest launch by Australian start-up Amperna.
Recent research predicts the global probiotic skincare market will reach US$81 million in 2025 (up from US$20 million in 2017).
While the skin microbiome has been topical in global markets for some time, it’s an emerging trend in Australia in part facilitated by heightened consumer awareness of the the gut microbiome and probiotic benefits, paving the way for a new wave of cleansers, moisturisers and serums.
Australian brand Amperna is an active probiotic skincare range designed for problematic skin. The brand was founded by Kiri Yanchenko as a response to her own skin conditions and formulated by a chemist.
The Amperna range uses a probiotic complex that aims to support the skin’s barrier, which can protect from free-radical damage, support the immune system and reduce inflammation. Preliminary research backs these claims, showing that harnessing the power of probiotics can help balance the skin’s microbiome and ease skin conditions like rosacea, eczema and acne. Probiotics are able to produce natural antibiotics called antimicrobial peptides that can fight bad bacteria, and they also improve the skin’s ability to deal with external damage like sun, pollution and free radicals.
As well as the probiotic complex, Amperna products contain hyaluronic acid, glycolic acid, vitamin C, vitamin B5, ceramides and other ingredients designed to soothe and hydrate skin.
The line includes an Ultra Gentle Soothing Cleanser, a Lightweight Soothing+ Emulsion to moisturise and protect skin, a 10 per cent Pro+ Resurfacing Lotion containing 10 per cent glycolic acid, a Pro+ Vitamin C Hyaluronic Serum, and a Probiotic+ DS Soothing Serum formulated to calm redness. The products are non-comedogenic, suitable for all skin types, and have been tested on various skin conditions including acne, rosacea, eczema, dermatitis, and perioral dermatitis.
Amperna products are free from sulfates, parabens, petrochemicals and mineral oils, vinyls, phthalates, phenoxyethanol, synthetic fragrances and colours, bleaches, PPG, DEAS, TEA, aluminium and alumina. They are also Australian-owned and made, vegan, and cruelty-free.
